Arts Night

On Tuesday and Wednesday night this week the Arts Department treated a near capacity audience at the Lawson Field Theatre to a variety of quality performances. The feature act "Juvie" was performed by Year 12 and 13 Drama students, assisted by the Year 11s. It was a hard hitting, openly theatrical performance on Juvenile crime. The play was opened by an equally hard hitting metalcore band, which created a strong contrast with the gentle classical music of the "We'll be Bach" chamber group, playing in the foyer beforehand.

A selection of musicians from Year 10 upwards performed a variety of genre, on various instruments, with some students showing remarkable versatility. Included were several compositions written and performed by students, and several students performing for the first time. Sprinkled with a rockquest band and another chamber group, were several guitar and vocal performances, and two short plays, "Lessons in Fear" (remember the Tooth Fairy Apprentice from last year's prize giving?) and of course the "Two gentlemen from Verona" scene that won best 5 minute student directed scene at the East Coast Shakespeare Festival, and is being performed in Wellington at the National Festival this weekend. The finals of Campion Idol were also decided, with Saachi Kepa and Kayla Hatton competing for the opportunity to be part of the local High School Idol later this year. Kayla Hatton was voted the winner by an audience vote.

Also of note in the evening was the willingness and ability of students to step up and take on new roles, including photography, videoing, working and arranging sound equipment, and lighting.
